CEO
My name is Abimbola Taiwo Omowunmi, a graduate of the Federal University of Technology Akure (FUTA), from the department of Agriculture. I’m happily married with a beautiful daughter.
Why Real Estate?
Let me take you back to 2009. My parents bought a parcel of land from the famous omonile somewhere in Ikorodu. We paid the sum of 100,000 naira — which was not beans at that time! Guess where they gave us land? Somewhere so far, I’m sure even okada riders would say “Aunty, abeg I no dey go that side.”
A few months later, we discovered the painful truth: the actual price of that place was 70,000, while land inside town was 150,000. Can you imagine? The omonile and the person who introduced us to them joined forces to chop 30k from us. But at that point, nothing could be done. My parents just sighed, “at least we now own a property.”
Fast forward to 2011, we started the foundation. The place was still bush, and since we couldn’t be the only human beings living with lizards and snakes plus money no too dey, construction was slow.
Then one day in 2012, we reached our site only to discover film trick! Our land had been sold to another person. Foundation destroyed. A new building already standing there. My people, I shouted “AHHH!! What happened!!”
My mum went to meet the omonile. Guess what he said? Exactly what you’re thinking: “Nothing I can do.” He even had the audacity to say we were too slow and should have finished building by then. Imagine!
But my mum is not the type to hear “No.” She was like that persistent woman in the Bible who kept disturbing the judge. She kept going to meet this man. Sometimes she dragged me along, and I witnessed how he insulted her, chased her out, and even told his gateman, “If that woman comes again, lock the gate!”
Finally, in 2014 after years of wahala he gave us another piece of land. Guess where? Farther than the first one, right beside a swamp. Well, what could we do? Half bread, they say, is better than puff-puff. We collected it with joy and managed to start another foundation. By 2016, we moved in.
This experience struck something deep in me. Nobody should go through this kind of stress. Nobody should be cheated and treated this way. Nobody deserves omonile wahala.
I began asking around, and guess what? Almost all the land owners in Lagos have their own bitter omonile stories. That’s when I asked myself, “So what’s the solution to this omonile pandemic?”
The answer? Real Estate.
